there's not a lot of choice in external drives, where are you located? region of the world? be sure and ask about particular models before buying, you don't want some crossbranded piece of crap

well basically usb is a problematic interface, the cpu has to do almost all the work, and to top that off it's a shared resource reviews of that burner were good, they reported a firewire interface also, it's a better option if you have it than usb whenever you get into quality scanning and data preservation for the long haul, you'll reevaluate that statement it might take a year or two, it did for me

firmware versions can be tricky, but they don't know memorex, put a disk in, use write mode and copy and paste the right screen info into a reply(like so) until we know this it's hard to speculate

data disks are better kept around 4 gigs in size, single layer media is much easier to burn and much more relaible with a lot more burners there are enough cases where you have to have dual layer, but not for data, especialy mp3's

as long as you have usb2 on your laptop then an external is a better option, try the 4x burn tho

welcome to the forum burning at 8X with that old of a laptop drive is a little dangerous, lower burn speed to 4x the blanks are great at 8X in a newer dvd burner, laptop burners are not as good as regular full size, they break down quicker also ps, it's better to start your own thread

If you had read the dual layer burn posts in this forum first you would have saved some money by buying good disks, verbatim 2.4x

the vob files in a dvd video complaint file set are mpeg2 but there's more to making a playable video dvd than that
