Sounds like a video driver issue to me. Go to Tools -> Settings -> General tab -> page 2, tick Don't Use DirectDraw Overlays and click OK. Now test it again. Alternatively you could look for newer drivers for your videocard.

Are dual layer dvds more sketchy than regular 'uns?

Remove any disc and close the tray before updating then just run that exe and it'll update the firmware. Reboot the computer after it has finished -

GraphEdit is pretty simple to use: open it, go to File menu then Render Media, choose a mp3 file and click OK. It'll show a few boxes and the one(s) in the middle is(are) the problematic filters (the first and the last boxes are input/output holders). From the name of the problematic filters you can have a look in Add/Remove Programs to see which program/codec pack/etc is the problem.

And you're lucky today because I do have that burner and it works fine with both 2.4x and 8x Verbatim blanks. My personal choice is the 2.4x ones Make sure you're using the latest firmware on it too (1.04). -
Try a lens cleaning disc on that drive. Also try with Verbatim 2.4x (MKM-001-00 dye) blanks if you can find them. If all that doesn't work then you'll need to get a new burner

You probably have a bad filter that's messing up mp3 decoding. Use GraphEdit to see which filter is being used and then remove the software/codec pack/etc that installed it.

Look for updated drivers for your motherboard's chipset and/or SATA controller(s). Use SIW if you don't know their brand/model. Also make sure you're using the latest BIOS for your motherboard. You might want to try another SATA cable and other SATA ports, as there seems to be communication problems.

That Optiarc AD-7240S is a very good burner. Another option would be the latest model by Pioneer. You do have a SATA port available, right? -

From a technical point of view, dual-layer burning is a lot more difficult to perform than single-layer burning, and, because of this, the quality of the dual-layer blanks plays the most important part. From our tests we have found Verbatim 2.4x (MKM-001-00 dye) DVD+R DL blanks to be the best dual-layer blanks on the market, followed by Verbatim 8x (MKM-003-00 dye) DVD+R DL blanks. For the best chance of making your $ony blanks work with your burner, check if you have the latest firmware on it (you can right-click your burner's name in ImgBurn and choose Check For Firmware Updates). -

That burner is quite old now and I'm not sure it has good support for the 8x Verbatim blanks. Have you thought about getting a new burner? It's probably cheaper than a spindle of Verbatim blanks, and being new it should have good support for the 8x blanks. -
If you want to burn them as they are you should use the Build mode. If you want to burn them on a DVD that's playable on any standard DVD player then you'll need to use DVD Flick, ConvertXtoDVD or similar programs to convert the AVI(s) before burning.

When overburning, burn at the slowest speed (e.g. 8x) for a better chance of success. You're using 90min CD-Rs, right?
-
That isn't the latest firmware version for your burner (notice the dates on the page I've linked above).
-
Writing from either of them will work just the same
-
Update your burner's firmware (remove any disc and close the tray before updating then reboot after it's finished) and try again. If it doesn't work at first then try the other available write speeds.
-
Please post the log of that burn.
-
Try updating your burner's firmware (remove any disc and close the tray before updating then reboot after it's finished). Try burning at 6x or 8x. If that doesn't work then use a lens cleaning disc on your burner. If all that doesn't help then you should get a new burner.
-
Your burner thinks your disc isn't empty. Have you tried with other blanks?
