A US patent has been filed for the discs that could hold both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions of movies. Currently movie makers and technology companies are dividing into camps that back either one or the other of the two formats. The creation of the discs could end the looming battle over the different high-definition formats. Format wars The design of the disc patented in the US would have three layers. One for a standard DVD version of a film and then one for each of the competing formats. The innovation is thought to be possible because the rival formats store data on the discs at different depths. Using reflective films should make it possible to store data for one movie format in one layer but to see through that, if needed, to the deeper layer which has the same movie in the rival format. The engineers behind the idea reportedly work for the Warner Brothers movie studio. The idea could end the potential confusion that consumers face as high-definition films in different formats start to go on sale. Few movie studios are planning to release films in both high-definition formats; the majority are backing Blu-ray. Only three are backing HD-DVD. This week movie studio Universal announced it would not support the Sony-backed Blu-Ray format. In late September Warner Brothers will release the first movie in both high-definition formats. For consumers the issue is made more confusing because Microsoft and Sony have backed different formats for their next generation games consoles. Industry analysts have predicted that the confusion could mean the market for high-definition movies is stunted until one format becomes dominant.

In addition to the bosses advice, any chance of posting up a log of one of your ImgBurn burns ? It will show us the dye on the media you are using....

That's cos the standalone players compensate for some DVD errors I imagine cos they know that discs get dirty or scratched. Your DVD drive in the PC looks for perfect data off the disc, what it's saying is that your data, just burnt is NOT perfect. You have quoted Sony & Memorex as the brand but they don't make the actual dye on the disc. This varies a lot between manufacturers, the best is probably those made by Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden with some of the worst being made by CMC MAG. Take a look at a log from ImgBurn and see what dye your discs are using then look at the Media/Drives forum (link in my signature) and see some tests on most commonly used media, if yours is in there take a look at the scans etc compared to Verb and Taiyo Yuden dye. If you post a copy of your log we can check the dye manufacturer for you

I read the post and didn't comment as I had no comment I have the re-mastered trilogy on WS VHS and then again on remastered DVD. I wouldn't bother with the original releases now myself.

Also if you need to check firmware availabiliy for your drive, open ImgBurn, then rightclick your drive where visible in the GUI and select firmware updates. If you're connected to the internet you will then go straight to any available firmware for your drive

We really need to see the error message (that the boss asked for above) or the log from a burn in ImgBurn that fails....
