With what program do you try to play it on the computer? If you have Windows Media Player installed. Browse to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and right click on that file and select play with Windows Media Player (or your own software player). The stand alone player, you know if it will play burned discs?

If I understand you. You can insert the burned disc and it tells you it's a DVD-ROM. I don't see that as a problem. What is the real problem? That you can't play the disc? If you insert the burned disc and open Windows Explorer, can you then see a VIDEO_TS folder with some .ifo/.bup/.vob files inside?

Can you post the log of that burned disc? Not sure why you need to change it. The issue of not wanting to read the burned disc, sounds as it's not related to the book type setting. More of a bad burn.

Might be that you have the bit setting (book type) option enabled. DVD-ROM usually works better on older players, but should be no problem on later ones. Edit: You burner is by default book typed by the program when you burn +R media.

You shall answer 'Yes' to that question, and it will add the .ifo/.bup/.vob ( = DVD Video files) files in a proper VIDEO_TS folder for you.

Sounds as the laser has problems to read the discs. Perhaps try to clean the laser head with some alcohol.

Did you restart the computer?

Older burners, like this one, very often have problems burning DL media. Could be that it simple needs to get in contact with a cleaning disc.

Have you tried burning at 2.4x. Now you have used MAX = 4x.

Have you tried another burning program, to rule out that this program is the issue?

Buy a small package with 10 discs of -R Verbatim or similar good quality brand. The only way to know if it works in your players, is to try. It could also be worth to run a cleaning disc in the players. They do attract dust.

Older stand alone players can have problems playing burned discs. How old are those that won't play? -R media worked better for me in the old time when my DVD player had issues playing burned discs.

Not sure that's it's ruined. Once tried to force a burn to activate buffer under runs throughout the whole burning phase and the disc worked. Do as mmalves posted in #6, to determine if the hard disk or burner has gone into PIO mode rather than DMA mode.

What OS do you have on it? Microsoft XP? I had 256MB on my old XP computer and no burning issues with that level of memory. If it's a desktop computer and that old - they usually have two IDE connectors. Having the burner and hard disk on the same cable can slow it down. Tried to separate them? It's not autospeed = the program can determine the right speed - instead it goes for MAX speed if it's not set up. AWS = Automatic Write Speed and needs to be configured in the Main Menu -> Automatic Write Speed if you want to use another speed than MAX.

If you have 256 MB of RAM and running a modern OS like Vista it could create a problem. The buffer issue is that your hard disk can't feed the burner with the data fast enough. Using a slower write speed can solve that. Other options is not to use the computer for other tasks while you are burning or try to defragment the hard disk. Edit: Mrs Slow today also...
